- Installing The Arabic Tutor(tm) from the CD:
Note: in all cases, it is recommended that you close all other
running applications before you start the installation. If you experienced
problems or crashing applications since the last time you booted up, it is a
good idea to reboot the machine and start a fresh session.
- If you have Windows 3.1x:
Insert the CD in the CD drive. From Program Manager, choose
File then Run. In the comand line type
D:\arabi16\setup.exe
(see Figure 1). If your CD drive is E or F,
replace D above by your drive letter.
When you click OK, you get a screen like
Figure 2. You can either accept the
default directory or click the change directory button and type
another name. Then follow the instructions on screen.
The first time you run the program, it'll ask you to enter your serial number.
Your serial number can be found on the registration form (which we encourage you to
return to us with coments, if any) and also on the license agreement which you
keep. Please notify us if either is missing.
Of course, there are other ways of achieving the same goal. If you are
comfortable with some other way, feel free to do that.
- If you have Windows NT 3.5, 3.51:
Well, probably you don't
need instruction in this case. You would follow the same instructions
as above with one important exception: in the comand line, replace
arabi16 by arabi32, so your command line reads D:\arabi32\setup.exe
- If you have Windows 95 or Windows NT4.0:
Click the Start button (on the taskbar) then Run. In the
command line, type D:\arabi32\setup.exe
(see Figure 3). You'll get an advice to
close aother applications (if any), then a screen similar to
Figure 4 is displayed. You can change the
directory or accept the default and proceed by clicking the computer icon.
Then follow on screen instructions. The first time you run the program, it'll ask you to enter your serial number.
Your serial number can be found on the registration form (which we encourage you to
return to us with coments, if any) and also on the license agreement which you
keep. Please notify us if either is missing.
- Part of the screen is covered, how do I scroll?:Under
Windows 95 and NT4.0 or later, the taskbar covers part of
the screen. It also does with other applications. There
is an easy way around this: put the taskbar in an auto-hide
mode (go to Settings/taskbar and check the auto-hide
box). This way, the taskbar appears only when you drag
the mouse there (usually the very bottom of the screen)
- I am trying to install EasyArabic by copying the 2
disks from the CD, but have problems with disk 2:
Make sure you copy the contents only and not the
folders (disk1, disk2) to the floppies. Otherwise setup
won't work - even if you can start up the program. Please
e-mail us your pre-reg number for EasyArabic only after
you register The Arabic Tutor and when both disks are
installed.
- I can hear sound but not in lesson ..., I get a
message suggesting sound configuration problems or
missing file: In this case, it is likely the latter -
a missing file: either it was not copied or got
corrupted. Check to see if you have a file named the same
as the lesson but with extension ".wav" (has
the speaker icon) in the program directory. (e.g.
lesson22.wav). Try opening it in your sound editor
(recorder) or double-click it under Windows 95 and see if
you can hear sound.
- Setup terminates at disk number ... (disk version
only): This could happen due to bad media (i.e
corrupted disk or X-ray / magnetic field exposed). You
can check for that by performing a thorough scan (Windows
95) or surface scan DOS) on the offending floppy. If
errors are reported, contact your vendor for replacement.
Remember to do thorough/surface scan, standard check may
not report all errors.
- Other Arabic learning resources:
We are in the process of compiling a growing list of resources for
various levels of Arabic learners and we welcome (in fact encourage) your
feedback if you have first hand experience. Please e-mail us under the
subject "Arabic learning resources". We hope to replace this request by
an answer soon. If you are a vendor of such a product, we can't accept
the review but we can accept a commercial sample (we can return samples
if s/h is paid for).
