Search the Web: Here's a list of major search engines. Check out our search tips and save time! Search engines are listed in alphabetical order (not rank).

- AltaVista
: Another powerful search facility. AltaVista allows you
to search the web or usenet in any language (default
option) or even ask a question. You can also specify a language from a drop down
list. Arabic is not listed yet but won't be difficult
(Hebrew is already there). AltaVista is one of the most
comprehensive indexes of the web.
- AOL Netfind: A Web directory and search engine. Be sure to use AND or NOT between words to get accurate results. This engine allows you to refine your results.
- Ask Jeeves: Ask Jeeves is a special kind of search engine - it tries to answer your question by directing you to a page that most likely matches the info you need. It is more of a human-powered and researched (compared to robots on other engines). If Jeeves can't answer your question, it'll display machine search result from other engines.
- Excite : Another
useful search engine. The power search allows more
options where you can rule out words and insist on the
presence of others. Also contains a web guide.
- Google>: This engine uses popularity of links as a ranking factor which may be useful in some cases, but not in others. A similar engines is called Direct Hit.
- Go To: This is based on advertised keywords: if one pays for the keyword, the site become more relevant (like looking at display ads in yellow pages?). Non-paid results are also available from the Inktomi engine.
- HotBot : Although it
came a little later, HotBot is a powerful search engine
with options available on the first search screen
including display options. You can access advanced
options that restrict results and narrow down the search.
This is the WiReD engine.
- Inktomi: This engine is marketed to a number of search sites. They use same index but rank and display results differently.
- Infoseek : Another
early comer to the search business. Infoseek allows you
to search the web and many other sources (like news,
e-mail) and has search options (see tips) to refine the
search. Like Yahoo, Infoseek includes a net guide and has
mirror sites around the world. It also has custom news.
Infoseek allows you to search within your first results.
- LookSmart: This site is similar to Yahoo (see below) in structure (human compiled directory) and allows seach in different categories. If it fails to provide results, it calls upon AltaVista's services.
- Lycos : Lycos is
among the first few search engines. It uses a graphical
interface with many options. Allows you to search the
web, sounds, pictures, personal pages and so on. Lycos also
has a community directory.
- Microsoft Network (MSN):
This is a central location with many search facilities
under different categories. It loads a random search page
(company) when you start it. Uses frames and highly
graphical. You can search under general (default),
international, business and finance, entertainment,
computers, people, reference ... etc. You can also select which
engine to use.
- Netscape Search: allows choice of search engine and has its own directory.
- Northern Light: has large indes, can organize results by topic and has a special collection (free to seach, pay to view).
- Search.com: another Infoseek engine-based search with options to search different categories. Used on CNet.
- Snap: Another Yahoo rival - web guide and search engine.
- WebCrawler : Webcrawler
is another early comer search engine. You can search for a
word or phrase and use other options. Contains a web guide. This is best if
your search term is popular.
- Yahoo : Yahoo is one
of the first guides/search engines on the W3. It contains a net
guide (topics under categories) and a search facility. If
you click options (next to the
search button), you can improve your search session.You
may want to choose the mirror site closest to you.
