Answers
Saturday:
This week's theme is subjects we study in schools. I used to hate
memorizing who did what and when in my history, Arabic taariiX (X is Arabic letter No. 7). History
is more than a record of events, of course, and this concludes our word for today.
Now, how do you say "We like history."?

Sunday:
Ok, today's word is the subject of your host -physics. in Arabic, we say
fiizyaa'. It is hard to define the boundaries of sciences these
days, but "physics etc" used tobe the study of nature. Now, how do you
say: 'The teacher studies physics"? (sm)
Monday:
Another branch of science is, of course, chemistry or kiimyaa' in
Arabic. You may know already that chemistry has Arabic origins (alchemy is
you might have guessed is an alteration of the Arabic term). The Arabic is
taken from the root kamaa which means "to hide, or conceal".
Translate : "We study chemistry at school".
Tuesday:
Today's word is the tools of trade in science, I mean mathematics or,
riyaDiyyaat as we call it in Arabic. Tomorrow you'll meet a
branch of math as well. Now, how do you say: "mathematics is a useful
science"? Hint: in Arabic, nouns which function as a concept are defined
with "al-" even though this sounds totally wrong in English!
Wednesday:
Today's word is easy. It is of Arabic origin that even preserved the
definition (using al-).jabr in Arabic (indefinite) is what came
to be called algebra. Arabs did a lot of work in this field mainly during
the Abbaasi period. Your homework is to translate: "Algebra is an
ancient science."
Thursday:
Ok. Tired of science classes? How about playing sports? RiyaaDah
is the Arabic for sports. It could be anything from soccer to horse riding
or even swimming. How do you say: "They like sport."?(m)
Friday:
To end this week's words, today's is sociology. In Arabic, it is
'Ilmu l ijtimaa' ('Ilm for science i.e "logy" andijtimaa;means
"gathering"). Sociology was pioneered by Ibn Khaldoon who is famous for
his book al-muQaddimah.How do you say: "Have you (sf) read about
Ibn Khaldoon"?
