Last Week's Answers

Saturday:

First of all, sorry for the suspension of the class. I was visiting home. Talking about travel, let's take a look at a number of country names in Arabic - hopefully, there'll be more in the coming weeks. Today's word is the homeland of your host - Palestine. In Arabic, it is pronounced filasTiin. How do you say: "The teacher is from Palestine."?
Arabic word

Sunday:

Jordan, Arabic al-Urdunn is to the east of Palestine. Also knows as "The Hashimite Kingdom of Jordan". How do you say: "Ammaan is a city in Jordan."?
Arabic word

Monday:

Just to the north of Palestine, on the east coast of the Mideterannean is Lebanon, Arabic Lubnaan. Lebanon's capital city is Beirut - also on the coast. Now, how do you ask: "Is Beirut the capital (city) of Lebanon?"
Arabic word

Tuesday:

Today's word is Syria, Arabic Suuriyya which is north of Jordan and both east and north of Lebanon. Syria's capital city is Damascus or Dimashq in Arabic. How do we say "Syria is an Arab country"?
Arabic word

Wednesday:

Just East of Syria, there is Iraq (Arabic al-'IraaQ). Iraq'a capital city is Baghdaad. How do you say "We went to Baghdaad and BaSrah."? (Hint: gh is Arabic letter#19, BaSrah is called al-BaSrah, thick S, in Arabic).
Arabic word

Thursday:

Ok, we've reached the Gulf by now. Today's word is Kuwait or al-kuwayt in Arabic (with the extra al-). Kuwait is south of Iraq on the North-West edge of the Arabian Gulf. How do you say "Kuwait is a small country."?
Arabic word

Friday:

Today's word is also a gulf state. It is called al-baHrain in Arabic which is, as you can easily guess, Bahrain in English. Bahrain's capital city is al-manamah. How do you ask: "Did you go to Bahrain?" (sf). Remember that all city and most country names are treated as sf.
